What is a Hosta?
| What
is a Hosta? |
| It
is extremely difficult to give a short answer to ‘What
is a hosta’? A quick survey of just a few of some of the
plant shapes, leaf shapes, colors and flowers leads back to
its botanical description. They are a hardy herbaceous perennial
plant. They originally came from Japan, China, and Korea. |
| ‘What
is a hosta’? can also be addressed by attempting to describe
the plant. The leaves come in a wide range of shapes, sizes,
colors, and combinations of leaf colors, such as green and gold.
The hosta also is a low maintenance plant that can be grown
in a variety of soils and sites. The
hosta plant usually matures in 4 to 8 years. The size of the
plant is determined by the hosta cultivar. The cultivar or
variety (common name), determine the plants size, leaf color,
bloom color, and leaf width and texture. 'What is a hosta?'
grows into a lengthy answer. The answer may include exhibits
of hosta plants that would graphically display the huge differences.
A mature hosta could only be a few inches in diameter and
a Hosta ‘Blue Angel’ could grow up to 8 feet wide.

| A
hosta is an extremely popular plant. They are easy to grow and
some cultivars will flourish under the shade canopy of a large
tree. There are over 2500 different cultivars to choose from.
Propagation of hostas is easy by just dividing the existing
plants. In summary, the hosta plant is a great addition to a
garden, or as a foundation plant, a border plant, and in shady
sites. |
