How to Grow Hostas
How to grow hostas begin with the planting process. Hostas prefer well-drained soils amended with organic matter, such as compost or rotted animal manure. Growing hostas on raised beds is highly recommended and soggy soil conditions will not work Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and at least twice as wide as its diameter. Then backfield the hole and water well.

How to grow hostas should include some knowledge of when to plant. Planting, transplanting and dividing should be done in early spring when the leaves begin to emerge. Dividing can be done either by cutting away a section of a clump with a sharp shovel or by lifting the root mass and separating it by hand.

Light requirements can range from partial sun to dense shade, depending on the cultivar. It is important to know the specific needs of each hosta selected. You may want to avoid planting a hosta in direct afternoon sunlight. The leaves may scorch.

Another tip is to place mulch around hostas. Keep them moist with supplemental irrigation when necessary. Hot summer days may require additional irrigation. Growing hostas is not difficult if these few suggestions are followed.
