Hosta Varieties
There are hundreds of hosta varieties from which to choose and more varieties become available each year. Hosta varieties are selected for many reasons or for no reason except that they attract the eye. Choosing a hosta variety is easy because there is a vast amount of information available on web sites and catalog pictures. Choosing the one perfect hosta from the multitudes of choices is much more difficult.

The size of hosta varieties is one way to narrow the choices down. The location or plant site will somewhat determine the plant size. Several small spreading hostas can be placed in 2 foot square area, whereas, a “Blue Angel’ hosta would quickly overwhelm a small area.

Hosta varieties can also be selected from leaf appearance. Hostas have many leaf sizes and leaf colors. Choosing a hosta variety to enhance a garden with its unique leaf color is common. Hosta plantings can be striking and colorful when the leaf colors are chosen by gardeners in order to show or draw attention to a particular area in a garden.

Many gardens have a variety of hostas. They provide unique color, and most hosta varieties grow well in shady areas and we have not even mentioned the colorful flower scapes yet. Flower color comes in many shades of lavenders to bright whites. The flower scapes extend from the middle of the plant providing pleasing eye appeal.
