Hosta Plants
Hosta plants are an extremely popular perennial plant. They are grown for their unique beautiful foliage. Hosta plants originated in Japan, China, and Korea. They have earned themselves a place in many yards and gardens across the United States. Hosta plants are very adaptable to site locations that would not be favorable to other plants.
The hosta plants may be used in many garden or landscaping situations because the many cultivars of hosta differ in size and color. A shady area under a tree or on shady side of a garden or house is not a problem with a beautiful hosta plant. Hosta plants are also quite tolerant of soil types. Soils that are very low in organic matter should be supplemented with an organic amendment such as peat moss, composted pine bark, or composted plant materials.

Hosta plants are easy to maintain. All you do is let them grow. They will mature in 4 to 8 years. Most hosta plants develop a rounded shape, while some other cultivars form a vase shape. Care must be taken to give the very large cultivars, like the Hosta ‘Blue Angel’, plenty of room to grow. The ‘Blue Angel can spread up to 8 feet wide.

Hosta plants also display leaves that may be a solid color or some cultivars have variegated leaves. The solid colored leaves may be blue, green, gold, or yellow. The variegated leaves may include a combination of lighter and darker shades of color. Some have lighter colors in the center of the leaves and some leaf margins show a lighter color on the leaf edge. Hosta plants are varied and colorful. They readily adapt to the needs of most gardening situations.
